Yesterday I turned 27! I'm officially in my late twenties. People always ask you how you feel on your birthday and if you feel any older, and truthfully the jump between 26 and 27 does feel a bit more signifiant for some reason. I keep thinking about how strange it is that Les and I were 18 when we met, 25 when we got engaged, and we won't be married until we're 28! That wasn't planned, of course, but it suddenly seems like such a long time to wait. But, I did have a truly wonderful birthday. It was also our very last day staying with my parents in Maine (after three months) so it was kind of like an end-of-a-mini-era celebration, too!
My dad was determined to catch lobster for us before we left, so last week he bought a wholeeeeee lot of frozen fish for bait. He's allowed to have three traps in the water and he started baiting and checking them toward the end of last week. On Friday, he pulled them and had caught six! Only two of them were mature enough to keep, though, and we made a delicious lobster crostini for an appetizer.
We mixed the lobster meat, a little melted butter, a squeeze of lemon, green onions, and a tiny bit of shredded pepper jack cheese. If I'm being honest, the catching and cooking of the lobster was not my favorite thing. I had to leave the room when my dad was going to cook them... but I know he lobsters responsibly (measures them to make sure they're adults and checks to make sure they're not female). I think I'd rather just be handed a lobster roll and not meet the ingredients first. :) We finished the night watching "Emma" (interested to hear what others thought of the movie!) and headed to bed.
Yesterday we didn't really have a plan for on my actual birthday because the weather was pretty iffy looking. But, it ended up being a BEAUTIFUL morning and afternoon, and it turned out to be the perfect day. We started with a chocolate chip pancake breakfast made by my love, Les, and then we packed a picnic for an afternoon sail.
We headed out for a nearby cove, hoping to have lunch on the boat and then get off to walk around the beach a little bit. But, the fog had other plans. We passed a lot of boats coming back down the peninsula away from the open ocean and we were wondering why... until we saw the dense fog that was rolling in. We decided it was best to turn around and head home so we didn't get stuck!
We ended up having a really nice picnic just on the mooring in front of my parent's house, followed by some lounging around in the sun listening to music and the waves lapping against the boat. One of us (or all of us) may have also taken a nap.
The rest of the night was just as I requested: some pizza and funfetti cupcakes! What more could a girl want? I also got Les to FINALLY watch Dirty Dancing for the first time. Birthday girl gets to pick the movie!
Thank you to all my friends and family who reached out to wish me a happy birthday! I'm so lucky in this life to have so many people who love me. I can't wait to see what 27 brings!
