So these aren't really "woes," more like challenges; but the English major in me is a sucker for alliteration! I realized the other day that as nice and neat as the checklists that I've shared are, they're definitely not the whole picture. While some aspects of our wedding planning have been a breeze, there are a few challenges we're facing and things I'm struggling with, so I thought I would share more on a few of those things today. I figured that because I've been sharing all of the "good and easy," I thought it was only fair to give a little glimpse into the tougher parts!
1. MY SHOES
I briefly mentioned this in my last wedding check-in, but I never thought it would be this hard to find wedding shoes! I have ordered and returned four different pairs so far, and I have another four pairs on their way to me. I know that seems excessive, but nothing has been right so far, whether it be fit, comfort, or color. The biggest problem I think I'm having is that I don't actually know what I want! I narrowed it down to at least open-toed because of the season, but that's about it. I've scoured Nordstrom, Dillard's, Bloomingdale's, Lord & Taylor, Neiman Marcus, Macy's, Zappos, DSW, Bella Belle, even Etsy. Les suggested that I make my own by buying a pair of plain shoes and adding on to them, but again the problem is I don't even know what it is that I want! All I know is that I haven't found it yet. Crossing my fingers that one of the four I recently ordered is a winner, but in the meantime if you have a super unique place to shop for shoes, PLEASE let me know. With seven months to go you'd think I have plenty of time, but my dress should be arriving this month and I'll need the shoes for my fittings, so we're a little under the wire! These are three of the pairs I've tried so far:
2. CEREMONY MUSIC
The only problem we're having with our ceremony music is that I've always envisioned walking down the aisle to a very specific version of a song that I found on Youtube, but the question is whether we should play the recording so that it's the exact version that I love, or have live musicians from our band play a rendition. The challenge with the former is having it end at the right moment (is there anything worse than the bride getting to the top of the aisle and having the music suddenly cut out), and the challenge with the latter is that our band has told me that there are a lot more instruments on the recording than are shown in the Youtube video, and that their rendition won't sound exactly the same. I think it's probably going to be easier to just have our band play their version of the song, but I've listened to the initial one I found so many times and picked exactly when I want to step out of Misselwood, so we just have to figure out a way to make it work!
3. MY HAIR
This one makes me a little nervous because, again, I'm not sure what I want! I think I have a general idea, but the biggest challenge I have with my hair is that it doesn't hold a curl. At all. Ever. Unless a ton of hairspray is involved and they're really tight curls, and that's not really the look I'm going for! So I'm stuck in this place of wanting to make sure that my hair looks at least somewhat special (and not my everyday straight 'do) and still looking like myself. I have saved a ton of inspiration pictures on Pinterest, but who knows what a style will really look like on yourself until you try it! I'm sure I'll feel better once I go for my first hair and makeup trial, which I still need to schedule! And yes, I'm anticipating having maybe two trials to make sure I can explore a few different hair options!
WHAT WE NEED TO TACKLE NEXT
1. Our Menu
While we've had our caterer picked out for months now, we still need to decide on our menu. This is also the final step to our invitations being ready to go out! Our venue has another showcase coming up at the end of March with their preferred vendors, so we'll get to try some of our caterer's food again, and I imagine we'll also set up a tasting soon after that as well!
As I lamented in my Wedding Vision post, my dream bouquet of all-white peonies likely won't be possible for our big day because they're not in season. Sigh. Either way, I have a clear picture of what I'm looking for in flowers overall and I'm excited for my mom, sister, and I to meet with our florist at the end of next month to start planning specifics!
3. Our Honeymoon
Planning our honeymoon seems a little daunting right now, to be honest. Les keeps reminding me that, in reality, we have plenty of time to plan because we're not going on our honeymoon until December (we're taking a somewhat local mini moon right after the wedding in September). Still, I think we should start looking at flights, researching where to stay, and making a list of things we definitely want to do and see! I'll share more about our destination later on.
The good news is that despite these few elements that are maybe causing a littttttttle bit of stress, planning our wedding has still been the most fun. I also can't believe that Les and I are coming up on a year since we got engaged! I already know I'm going to be a little sad when it's all over, so I'm trying to soak it all up while I can, challenges and all. :)
